Waking up with a stiff neck can be really unpleasant and uncomfortable .But there are things you can do at home that can help you without going to chiropractor or getting a massage.
Here is a simple method explained in a few steps for getting rid of a stiff neck by Allan Kakuk DPT a wellness physical therapist at the Mayo Clininc.
-Try to find the sore spot on your neck .Use your right hand if the sore spot is on the right side of your area ,or your left hand if the sore spot is on the left side of the area.
-Apply pressure on the knot once you feel using one finger or more (depends how big is the knot). The pain will increase once you apply pressure but it will be bearable .If you cannot reach the knot with hand you can use something like a tennis ball.
-Then turn your head slightly and slowly opposite the pain area , and then bend it in a diagonal sort of way ,as if you were trying to touch your armpit with your chin. Hold that position for 10 seconds and than let go and relax.
In this way when you activate the knotted muscle combined with pressure you help ease the stiffness in your neck.
Another way to relive the stiffness from your neck is to use the hot and cold treatment.
Use moist heat on your neck. The heat helps your muscle relax and unclench.
-Soak a towel in hot water for 5 minutes dry it out so it’s not dripping and than place the towel around your neck .Repeat this step atleast 2-3 times.
-Use an ice pack for the sore spot on your neck . Hold the ice pack for at least 15-20 minutes ,repeat on 2 hours for 3-4 times.
